SPECIALTY STRUCTURES

Specialty Structure Engineering

If you have a specialty structure that requires in-depth engineering analysis, trust in Consolidated Engineers Inc. You can depend on our highly trained staff members, as they have over 30 years of experience in producing high-quality engineering work and products that are reasonably priced. Read the details about and view the photos below of some of our recent work involving specialty structures.

Bulk Lubrication Storage Building

A portion of a larger overall design project included a 40 ft. wide by 75 ft. long bulk lubrication storage building to house the numerous storage tanks. From this location, the lubrication oils are pumped to the adjacent haul truck maintenance shop.

The soils at this location were of poor quality and necessitated a newer technology of soil enhancement to adequately support the building foundation. This facility provided enclosed space for ten storage tanks (each with a capacity of 10,000 gallons), all pumping and controls, plus an enclosed room for accumulated hazardous wastes.

Adjacent to the length of the building is a covered OTR tanker truck off-loading slab.
Both the storage tank and off-loading slab provide spill collection and containment provisions. The design included structural engineering, electrical design, mechanical engineering and site design.
Helical Pier Installation

Helical Pier Installation

This project upgraded the HVAC system and also remodeled and modified portions of the older Wagonwheel Elementary School. Larger HVAC units were placed on the existing roof, which necessitated revisions to the roof structure. The sizes of the kindergarten rooms were expanded outward, requiring new foundations and exterior walls.

We provided analysis and design for the modifications to the roof for the larger HVAC equipment. We designed the foundation for the classroom expansion utilizing helical piers, and also designed wall headers and beams, and prepared the material specifications. Finally, we provided special inspections of the helical piers during the construction phase.

This project involved modifications to a building that was 35 years old and founded on a drilled pier system. The design of the classroom expansion included a helical pier system.
Incident Investigations

Incident Investigations

Consolidated Engineers has investigated numerous incidents, accidents and structural failures, such as, but not limited to:
  • Rail car collision with conveyor belt
  • Conveyor gallery fire
  • Building foundation settlement
  • Fire in conveyor drive house
  • Wind damage
  • Take-up tower failure
  • Hoist beam failure
  • Blast disruption of local housing
Jib Crane

Jib Crane

Numerous jib cranes have been designed for a variety of industrial clients.
Lifting Devices and Stands

Lifting Devices and Stands

Consolidated Engineers has analyzed, load-rated, and designed hundreds of fabricated devices that are potentially questioned by MSHA for safety. This has included work stands, pipe support stands, various lifting devices, spreader beams, specialized maintenance brackets and devices, work platforms, specialty ladders, and more.
Maintenance Shop Bridge Cranes

Maintenance Shop Bridge Cranes

A colloid mining entity’s existing equipment maintenance shop has obsolete and undersized overhead bridge cranes. This has affected the production and efficiency of the facility. Therefore a study has been completed to assess the structural feasibility and costs of upgrading the two bridge cranes. In the extensive report, multiple alternatives were examined to provide the mine with options for budgeting purposes.
Mine Equipment Fueling Station

Mine Equipment Fueling Station

Located at Southern Powder River Basin Mine in Wyoming, this fueling facility near the truck shop has a concrete slab with room for one 50,000 gallon fuel tank and two 10,000 gallon fuel tanks.

The slab has spill containment and a storm water collection system. Adjacent to the tank slab is another slab designed for usage by either haul trucks or tracked vehicles. The slab is sloped to a catch basin and there are embedded rails in this slab to minimize damage from dozers. Consolidated Engineers provided the general arrangement plans, foundation design, containment arrangement, and site design.
Cranes and Hoists - Plant Monorails

Cranes and Hoists - Plant Monorails

Our team provided a structural review of existing monorail system within a natural gas plant building. We performed field investigation and structural analysis of 3-ton hoist support structure. We also provided the client with a load rating and written report.
Platforms and Access Systems

Platforms and Access Systems

We have designed platforms and an access system for a new 4-story elevator at a power plant. The design included platforms, safety ladders, guardrails, and structural steel framing.
Blasting Agent Storage Tanks

Blasting Agent Storage Tanks

MSHA had cited a local mine for safety violations on a contractor’s storage tank facility on the mine. The citations involved an inadequately elevated walkway, damaged tank supports, missing bracing and improper modifications to the tank structure

Our team provided a structural assessment of the damage, modifications, and more. We provided reporting and assistance to the contractor in bringing the structure up to acceptable structural requirements.
Safety Facilities

Safety Facilities

In this mining facility, the workers needed access to the roof for maintenance of the roof-top mechanical (HVAC) equipment. In order to meet MSHA safety requirements, a ladder with safety cage and roof edge guard rail system was required.

Our team provided services for the design of the ladder, the ladder cage, the rooftop walkways and the guardrail system.
Stilling Shed Upgrade

Stilling Shed Upgrade

A Wyoming coal mine has a dual truck dump (back-to-back hoppers) with stilling sheds that were designed by others. The sheds are not containing the fugitive coal dust (the stilling volume is insufficient), therefore the sheds must be replaced. The design of this project is currently in progress.

Our team provided the structural assessment of the existing structure to examine the feasibility of enlargement, which is not possible. Being provided: general arrangement plans, detailed structural framing design, foundation design, and the arrangement of the baffle curtains, which were recycled conveyor belting. Also to be provided are material specifications and construction engineering assistance
Truck Scale Structure

Truck Scale Structure

Consolidated Engineers has designed cast-in-place concrete foundations for three scales at three different mine. These are used in weighing over-the-road transport trucks. The facilities include:
  • 15’-3” wide by 91’-6” long scale on a shallow spread footing foundation
  • 12’-0” wide by 120’-0” long scale on a shallow spread footing foundation
  • 12’-0” wide by 120’-0” long scale on a deep (driven pile) foundation
